On April 29, 21 8th grade students and 13 parents, rode the Amtrak train to Jefferson City for a day of experiencing government first hand at the state capital. Students met with Rep. Sheila Solon as she explained the responsibilities of a state representative and shared her experiences with passing legislation in Missouri.
Students were introduced during the House of Representatives session and were able to listen to important legislation being discussed among House members. They also took a tour of the Capital including the famous Thomas Hart Benton room, Whispering Gallery, and the Hall of Famous Missourians. Students ended their day with a tour of the Missouri Supreme Court where they engaged in a mock trial in one of the courtrooms and saw important paperwork from the Dred Scott court case which originated in Missouri.
