Welcome to St. John’s Kindergarten
Welcome to a day in the Life of a Kindergarten student at St. John LaLande Catholic School in Blue Springs Mo. St. John’s was a leader in developing an all-day Kindergarten program in our area. We are proud of our Kindergarten program and the success it has had in guiding children to become an educated and active follower of Christ.
CONTENT AREA: We teach the basic skills reading, language arts, math, handwriting, science, and religion. The afternoon is devoted to enrichment and extension activities, and to social skills development. Students participate in physical education, music, art and computer classes weekly.
WEEKLY FOLDER: On Friday, all student papers from the week are sent home in a folder. We encourage you to review the work carefully. Accompanying the folder, a newsletter will update you on what is happening in the classroom. Frequently, personal notes and e-mails will go home as well. We ask that you read and respond to these personal communications.
READING PROGRAM: We use the Pathways reading program which has been utilized in the Blue Springs and Independence School Districts.
We have had much success with this reading program. We also include the “Reading Street” series for language, vocabulary phonics and reading comprehension.
Because we feel reading is so important, your child will receive a treasure from the treasure box each month when s/he turns in a book list. You are asked to record books that you read to your child at home, or that the child reads, and return the form to school when they are complete.
Your child will also complete a simple book report each month. H/she will receive a coupon for a personal pan pizza from Pizza Hut through their Book It Club.
MATH PROGRAM: We currently use the Saxon Math curriculum. The focus is on identifying numbers to 50, geometry; simple addition and subtraction, telling time to the hour, identifying, labeling and counting money by 5’s and 10’s, problem solving, ordinal numbers and much more!
RELIGION: We do have a Religion curriculum called “God Loves Us” but the beautiful thing about our school is we teach and talk about God all day long and we can incorporate God in all of our daily lessons. We focus on the seasons of Lent and Advent along with some of our favorite Saints. We learn the “Our Father,” the “Glory Be,” the ” Angel of God” and the “Hail Mary” throughout the school year. We attend the all school Mass weekly with our sixth grade buddies.
SOCIAL STUDIES AND SCIENCE: We alternate between Social Studies and Science curriculum weekly/monthly.
BIRTHDAY PRAYER SERVICE: Kindergarten birthdays are special events. We celebrate your child’s life by holding a birthday prayer service. We request that one parent attend the prayer service. Summer birthdays are celebrated as half birthdays during the school year.
DISCIPLINE PROCEDURE: Discipline is done in loving discipleship with the children. If a child keeps others from learning, or needs repeated direction, we utilize a “safe seat” in the classroom. Usually the child is able to regain control of his/her behavior when sitting in the seat. Further opportunities for redirection and reflection include sending the child to a buddy room, and/or providing private center time at the end of the day.
If you have any questions or concerns about our Kindergarten program, please contact us. We’d love to talk to you about it.
Meet our teachers:
Mrs. Knust has been a teacher and student at St. John LaLande for over 30 years. She and her family have been a part of our parish community since they moved from St. Louis in 1980. Mrs. Knust has taught a variety of grades at St. John LaLande. She currently is a Kindergarten teacher and is on the Athletic Board at St. John’s. Mrs. Knust holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary and Early Childhood Education from University of Central Missouri. She believes that her gift of teaching and love of Christ continue to bless her through her opportunities at St. John’s.
Mrs. Knust and her husband live in Grain Valley with their three children, all of whom attend St. John’s. She enjoys playing volleyball and spending time with her family and friends, but her greatest passion is watching her children excel in their sports.
Mrs. Schollmeyer has been teaching at St. John’s for the past nine years. She has taught kindergarten for eight years and first grade for one year. Mrs. Schollmeyer holds a Bachelor of Science in ED Speech-Language Pathology and a Master’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology.
Mrs. Schollmeyer is married and has two teenage children who both are graduates of St. John Lalande School. She and her husband are both involved here at St. John Lalande School and Parish along with volunteering and being involved in their children’s high schools and booster clubs. Mrs. Schollmeyer feels so blessed to not only watch the light bulbs turn on in her students’ heads, but to be a part of such a wonderful, nurturing environment.
