Third grade students are studying earthquakes and volcanoes in science. The students worked in partners forming a model of a volcano. Once finished, they used baking soda, vinegar, & Jell-o to simulate their volcano’s eruption. The children learned about acids and bases working together to create a chemical reaction and wrote in journals about a true volcanic eruption being a physical reaction, while our classroom simulation was a chemical reaction.
The room was full of genuine smiles and “ooohhhs and aaahhhhs!”
